May 12th Initiative
Join us to celebrate the life and legacy of one of history’s pioneering female mathematicians, Sophie Germain.
As part of the May 12th Initiative, we invite you to a special screening of the short movie “Je suis Sophie Germain”, presented in French with English subtitles. This event honors the 250th anniversary of Sophie Germain’s birth and highlights her remarkable contributions to mathematics.
Beyond the film, participants can enjoy an interactive quiz with exciting prizes, along with pizza and drinks in a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere.

We are looking forward seeing you there.
Our Goal
The Department of Mathematics and Scientific Computing is dedicated to excellence in research and teaching while actively promoting diversity, inclusion, and equal opportunities. Our association seeks to create visibility, provide support, and open opportunities for women in mathematics and related fields. Through these activities, we aim to inspire, connect, and support women in mathematics at all stages of their careers.
At the same time, we also want to promote a healthy and comfortable working environment for staff members and to support students in their academic and personal development. We believe that our contribution to the university must be complete: advancing research, fostering equality, and ensuring well-being for everyone in our community.
Support for Our Activities
In recognition of this ongoing commitment, our department was awarded the Gleichstellungsorientierungspreis of the University of Graz in both 2023 and 2024.
This prize has provided us with valuable resources, allowing us to expand the number and scope of our activities. With this support, we have been able to strengthen existing initiatives and develop new programs that reach an even wider audience.

Other Initiatives
GWM Talks are organized once/twice a semester with a female mathematician visiting Graz who is going to give a scientific talk accessible to everyone (like a colloquium). Coffee and sweets will follow to allow a relaxed atmosphere for discussion.
Details will follow but we plan to organize a picnic in June for all women and non-binary mathematicians as an oppurtunity to network and to share experiences in a relaxed atphmosphere.
Cake, snacks and conversation!
We will throw a dinner for all PhD students of every gender to netwrok and create a safe place where to share our experiences. The dinner will be on November 21 2025 in SR 126.51. Exact details will follow.
A Kids’ Box full of games, available in the department kitchen, to support researchers who occasionally need to bring their children to the office in case of emergencies.
Institutional membership in the European Women in Mathematics (EWM), which we financed to strengthen our connections with the international community and provide new opportunities for collaboration and exchange.
We plan the following but the details will follow:
- Coffee Time: On October 1 from 9:30 to 10:30am (Alumni HS Bibliothek) we invite new students to share a coffee in an informal and welcoming atmosphere, where they can ask questions and receive advice from more experienced students about university life.
- Analysis and Linear Algebra evenings: The date for the Analysis 1a exam is Friday, 5 December. To help students, we’re planning a “Long Night of Study” on Tuesday, 2 December. The event is open to all mathematics students, but we especially want to encourage first-year students to participate. Starting at around 17:00, there will be a dedicated room for them (SR 11.33). GWM will be there for answering questions related to Analysis 1a.
- Snack and Talk: On October 7, 14, 21 and 28 from 6pm to 9pm in SR 11.32 for 1st semester students. A gathering where students spend an evening with members of our institute, asking questions and discussing future perspectives in their studies and careers.
You'll find the SIGMA homepage (Studienvertretung und Interessengemeinschaft Mathematik) here.
Looking Ahead
We remain committed to creating an inclusive and supportive environment in mathematics and scientific computing. Our goal is to continue broadening our activities, reaching more students, and building lasting structures for gender equality within academia.
If you are a student, researcher, or partner institution interested in joining our initiatives, we warmly welcome your participation. Together, we can build a stronger, more diverse mathematical community.
